My Shanghai Dental Execution Pack
A printable planning and communication pack for international patients considering dental treatment in Shanghai.
Not medical advice. This pack helps with logistics, questions, records and cost comparison. Diagnosis, treatment choice, recovery and fitness to fly must be decided by a licensed dentist who has examined you.
My trip snapshot
Before I spend money on flights
I have a recent diagnosis / treatment recommendation from a dentist.
I have my X-ray / CBCT or have asked how to obtain a copy.
I have contacted at least two Shanghai clinics using the template in this pack.
I have a written estimate that states what is included and excluded.
I know how many in-person visits may be needed and whether a second trip is likely.
I have not booked a non-refundable return flight until the treating clinic confirms the timeline.
I checked current China entry rules from an official source, not an old blog post.
I know who will handle follow-up after I return home.

Entry-policy note. China's current unilateral visa-free policy lists business, tourism, family/friends visits, exchange and transit as covered purposes; medical treatment is not listed. If treatment is the main purpose of your trip, confirm your eligibility with an official Chinese immigration / visa authority before relying on visa-free entry. [S6]
1. Cost & Quote Checker
Bring this when comparing clinics.
Shanghai public-hospital policy benchmark for a regular single implant: the medical-service portion is capped at CNY 5,130 per tooth. The policy says this medical-service total includes consultation, lab and imaging work, implant placement, crown placement, scan/modeling, anesthesia and related medicines. It excludes extraction, periodontal cleaning, root-canal treatment, bone grafting, soft-tissue grafting and separately chargeable consumables. [S1]
Important: CNY 5,130 is a policy ceiling for the medical-service portion, not an all-in clinic quote. Implant-system and crown-material costs are separate. National procurement data published in 2024 reported implant systems at CNY 548-1,855 and crown materials at CNY 100-656; use those only as policy-era reference points and ask the clinic for current, case-specific pricing. [S2]

What is still unclear?
Do not compare only the headline number
The quote identifies the implant system / brand and crown material, not just "implant package".
The quote states whether bone grafting, extraction, temporary teeth and follow-up are extra.
The clinic has explained what happens if the treatment plan changes after examination or CBCT.
I have the cancellation / refund terms in writing before paying a large deposit.
2. Treatment & Travel Planner
Plan around stages, not marketing promises.
Implants commonly require staged care. NHS patient guidance states that implants are often left to integrate with bone for about 2-6 months, and restorative treatment may require several appointments. Some hospital protocols schedule a wound / stitch review about 7-14 days after placement. [S3][S4]
Flying after dental procedures: evidence is limited. A 2023 literature review suggested about one week after most dental interventions as a cautious planning interval and longer after sinus-lift procedures, but it explicitly says the final decision must be individualized by the clinician. Do not treat this as flight clearance. [S5]
Questions that can change the trip
Do I need an extraction first?
Do I need bone grafting or a sinus lift?
Is immediate implant placement possible, or only after healing?
Will I have stitches that need removal?
Can I have a temporary tooth, and under what conditions?
How many restorative visits are expected?
Can follow-up safely be transferred to my home dentist?
What would make the timeline longer?

6. 10 Questions for the Dentist
Ask before you agree to treatment.
What is the diagnosis, and what are the reasonable alternatives?
What implant system / brand and crown material will you use, exactly?
Why this option rather than a cheaper or less invasive option?
What is the total price, and what is NOT included?
How many in-person visits are expected, and how long between them?
Will I need a second trip to Shanghai? When can I safely plan my return flight?
I live abroad. What follow-up is needed, and what can my dentist at home handle?
What repair / warranty policy applies, and what could void it?
Before I leave China, can I receive copies of my treatment records, itemized charges and imaging?
If an implant is placed, can I get the product details recorded in my chart (brand, model / specification and traceability information)?
Why #8-10 matter: Shanghai's implant-pricing policy says institutions should provide warranty / repair for implant-related components within the warranty scope [S1]. Chinese rules also require relevant information for implantable devices to be recorded for traceability, and patients have rights to inspect / copy medical records, imaging materials and medical-charge information. [S7][S8]

Clinic contact for problems after I return home /
Your records: Chinese regulations give patients the right to inspect / copy a broad range of medical-record materials, including outpatient / inpatient records, test reports, medical imaging materials and medical-charge information. The institution should provide copying service when requested. The exact format (paper, disc, digital file, language) can vary, so ask early - especially if you need original digital imaging files.
